Vintage jewellery - flower cluster necklace

Flower cluster necklace

This delightful necklace makes a point of deceiving the viewer.  The flowers look like glass, but are a delicate plastic.  The metal baubles are coated plastic with faux green colouration (as if to appear old) and we believe the turquoise beads are glass.  It could date to as early as 1930, but it may have been made as a retro necklace, possibly in the 1950's.

The necklace is 44 cm long (17 1/4 inches) which is  between choker and princess length.  Each of the three clusters is about 3.5 cm long and 2 cm wide (1 1/4 by 3/4 in).  Each flower in the cluster ranges from .7 to 1.2 cm.  Each cluster contains about eleven separate flowers.

The flowers are mostly clear, but some have light shadings of yellow or blue.

This unique necklace is in good vintage condition.

vintage jewelley - Victorian glass bead necklace

 Painted porcelain bead necklace

This is what is known as a 'made up' necklace in that it is made up of several different bead styles.  Most important to the necklace are the white beads that we presume to be made of porcelain, possibly Victorian.  They consist of a continuous stem with a purple bud, followed by a purple flower, followed by a pink bud, all edged in gold tone, circling the middle of the bead vertically.  These are each slightly different so we presume they are hand painted.  The other beads are contemporary matt glass with old gold coloured metal spacers between.

The necklace is 43 cm (16.5 in) just over choker length.  The seven porcelain beads are about 1.2 cm and the purple glass beads are .8 cm in diameter.

Some of the porcelain beads have the odd nick.

Art Deco style 'machine age' necklace

The machine age was one of the inspirations of the Art Deco period.  This fascinating necklace combines brass coloured metal turnings with dark reddish-brown wood rectangular tubes (perhaps mahogany).

The necklace is 52.5 cm (20 5/8 in) long (Princess length).  The individual beads are about .4 cm wide (1/4 in) and the tubes are 1.7 cm (3/4 in) long.

It is in good vintage condition.

Victorian style pearl choker

Victorian style faux pearl choker with large blue paste centre stone

This elegant 3 strand Victorian style faux pearl necklace would suit someone with an eye for the dramatic.  It is shown here worn just under the neck but would look terrific worn as a collar (on the middle of the neck).

The necklace ranges from 29.5 cm to 42 cm (11.5 - 16.5 in) by means of a long silver tone link chain, which takes the necklace from collar to just over choker length. The centre piece is just over 3 cm by 2.5 cm.  The stone is 2.3  by 1.7 cm (1 by 5/8) with a prong setting.  Small pearls surround it and they are are surrounded by small diamantes.  The pearls are .5 cm (under 1/4 in).

The pearls are in good condition.  We have noted that one or two of the rhinestones surrounding the stone have begun to yellow, but this is hardly noticeable, considering the dramatic effect of this unusual necklace.

turquoise crystal necklace

Turquoise crystal glass necklace

What makes this crystal glass necklace so special is the colour - a beautiful shade of turquoise that glows on the skin.  Crystal necklaces that look like this one were produced in Bohemia during the Art Deco period.

The necklace ranges from 40.7 cm to 47 cm (16 - 18.5 in) from choker to princess length.  It has recently been restrung, with the extension chain added to increase its versatility.

The necklace is in good condition.

Crystal and glass necklace

Blue glass and crystal necklace

This delicate necklace is centred with a ruffled glass bead.  This bead is fragile (possibly Bohemian) and therefore not often seen.  It is surrounded by blue glass beads of various shapes, crystal and faux seed pearls (the coating has rubbed off some of the seed pearls, attesting to the age of the necklace).

The necklace is 39.5 cm (15.5 in) long - the choker length.  The central ruffled bead is 1 cm (just under 1/2 inch) in diameter.

The necklace is in good condition, and has been recently restrung.

1950's style painted bead necklace

Blue and white 'painted' necklace

This necklace looks as if it made from glass, but is actually plastic.  The impressionistic white lines are different on each bead, making it look as if they were hand painted.  We think it is from the 1950's.

The necklace is 49.5 cm (19.25 in) long  and extends to 46.5 cm (18in), in the Princess length range. The larger oval beads ares 1.4 cm ( /2 inch) by about 1 cm (3/8 in).  The slightly smaller beads are  narrow and there are tiny white spacers.

Vintage Bakelite and Lucite corded necklace
Vintage Bakelite bead

Vintage Bakelite and Lucite Necklace

This Bakelite and Lucite necklace has a simple elegance.  The centre bead has tested positive for Bakelite.  It is root beer colour, and facetted with diamond and triangle shapes, which show up better when worn than when photoed.  The yellow / gold Lucite beads on the sides are blushed at the edges and the smaller reddish beads glimmer from inside.

This vintage necklace is still on its original brown cord.

The necklace is 38cm (14.5 in) long, with an extender chain to 43 cm (17 in) - choker to princess length. The Bakelite bead is 1.5cm (5/8 in) by 1 cm (3/8 in).

arts and crafts style silver necklace

Silver 'Arts and Crafts style' leaf necklace

This silver necklace is reminiscent of Arts and Crafts style jewellery.  It has a simple leaf motif (Arts and Crafts often used nature in their designs).  And, it makes use of texture to show contrast.

The necklace is marked 865 (silver content), which indicates it is not English,  perhaps of continental make.  It also has a makers mark / hallmark of a triangle with what we think is a wading bird inside.  We have, as yet, been unable to determine the origin of this mark.

The necklace is 39cm (15.25 in) long and has an extension chain ending in a silver round bead that takes it to 44 cm (17.25 in ), which extends it from a choker to a princess length.

The necklace is in good condition.  It is deliberately not over polished to retain contrast.

blue crystal necklace

Blue crystal (facetted cut glass) necklace

Facetted cut glass beads are usually referred to as crystal, though technically the term crystal refers to minerals.  The 1920's and 30's produced costume jewellery distinct from what we think of as Art Deco, notably from Bohemia, where facetted glass / crystal was popular for necklaces.  This stunning necklace has graduated round beads and clear bicone facetted glass spacers.  It is an intense blue but the colour is difficult to describe more precisely as it changes with the background, and as it catches the light, as it does brilliantly.

The necklace is threaded on a chain and is 36.5 cm (14.5 in) long, the choker length.  We have added a new clasp and taken the liberty of adding a sterling silver extension chain, finished off with a matching bead, so that the necklace can optionally be extended to as much as 45.5 cm (18 in), the princess length.  The largest central bead is 1 cm (3/8 in) and is graduated to the smallest bead of .5 cm (1/4 in).

The necklace is in good vintage condition.

This elegant necklace is made of spangle shaped graduated clear glass beads (perhaps Bohemian, 1920-1930) that are a lovely shade of purple.  We have restrung them and added a sterling silver expansion chain ending in a matching bead.

The necklace is 39cm (15.25 in) long and extends to 46.5 cm (18in), bringing the necklace from the choker to the princess length.  The central bead is almost 2 cm (just under 1 inch) by about 1.2cm (1/2in)graduating to the smallest bead  about 1 cm (3/8 in) by 5cm (1/4 in).

The necklace is in good condition.

Amber pebble necklace

Amber pebble necklace

This knotted necklace catches the light abundantly.  It is made up pebble (aka rondell) shaped amber beads, very smooth and mostly clear looking but with some of the inclusions that are so desirable in natural amber.

Each pebble is a slightly different shape of about 5 mm long and 3 mm wide (1/4 by 1/8 inch).  The necklace is 47 cm long (18.5 in), which puts it in the Princess length range (the next length longer than  the choker).

This could well be a contemporary item, but is so light and pretty we included it in our necklace gallery.  It is in good condition.

1950's vintage costume necklace

1950's vintage plastic costume jewellery necklace

This vintage plastic necklace is a real 1950's gem, and 1950's "prim look" is in this season.  Pink and gray were a popular colour combination in the 1950's and this necklace is both fun and fits  1950's prim.

The necklace is 38 cm (15 in) so it fits in the choker range of lengths.  The beads are 1 cm (3/8 in) square, but threaded to look diamond shaped.  This 1950's necklace lies beautifully on the neck.

Heart shaped leaf plastic necklace

Heart-shaped plastic leaf necklace

Each leaf on this whimsical necklace has a stem attached and shows a marbled effect on the surface.  At the back are six matching round beads and a barrel clasp of the same colour and material.  It lays flat on the neck because the thread goes invisibly through the top part of the bead from front to back.

The necklace is 42 cm (16.5 in - that's within the choker range).  Each leaf is 2 cm long and shows about 1 cm of it's surface across   It may have been made in the 1960's, or perhaps earlier, but its quirkiness fits with 1930's Bakelite items.

The necklace is in good condition.

The necklace is 58.5 cm long (23 inches) - described as a matinee length.  The amber beads range in size from 1.8 cm long and 1 cm wide to 1 to .5cm wide (in inches, the larger beads are 3/4 by .4 in diameter).

Retro fruit necklace

Retro fruit necklace

This assorted fruit necklace is made of moulded plastic in a wonderful collection of pastel colours.  It is one of our favourites from the summer collection.

The craze for figurative plastic jewellery began in late 1935 and fruit was a popular choice.  Many of these were in bright colours so we think this pastel beauty may have come later.

The necklace is 43 cm (almost 17 in -  from choker to princess range).

The triangles on this Art Deco vintage Lucite necklace are flat on the back and curved on the top, a real light catcher.  The oval green beads are spaced with black Lucite rondells.  The triangular beads are arranged asymmetrically, as in the photo original.  The barrel style clasp is made of the same green Lucite, a nice touch.

Art deco Egyptian revival necklace

Embossed Egyptian Revival gold tone necklace.

This stunning necklace traces its inspiration from one of many Egyptian revivals, which include the art deco period.  The clever mechanism for holding the individual tabs on the necklace means that it lies perfectly on the neck.  Each tab has raised wavy lines in a stylised hieroglyphic design.

There is a crafted extension chain at the back that allows the necklace to be adjustable from choker length (25.5 cm/ 10 in) to a princess length (45 cm/ 17.5 in).  The tabs are 1.5 cm (.6 in) long by .4 cm (1/4 in wide).

This necklace has some discoloration to the gold tone finish on the last two tabs at one end (next to extension chain).  This has been reflected in the price.

Malachite necklace with graduated round beads

Malachite is a beautiful semi-precious stone and believed to be a powerful crystal by mystics, who make recommendations for its use in healing.  Each of these graduated beads has a different internal pattern of swirls and layers, and is separated by small green glass spacers.  There is more of this amazing green stone  to coordinate with this necklace in our  earring and bracelet galleries.

The necklace is 59.5 cm (23.5 in) - matinee length.  The beads range from 1.5 to .5 cm in diameter (1/2 -1/8 in).

There is the odd nibble on a small number of beads.
